Compatibility

The package is built for Debian and Ubuntu servers that run cron. It declares no dependency beyond gawk and gnuplot-nox, which apt installs, and it installs no kernel module or compiled binary of its own. The repository’s install guide gives the procedure.

For version 1.0.0-14, installation, argus-chart --help, argus-chart period on sample data and removal were played in a container on Debian 12, Debian 13, Ubuntu 22.04 and Ubuntu 24.04. That is a container validation, not a test on a real server.

What the server needs

  • Debian or Ubuntu, with cron running;
  • gawk and gnuplot-nox, installed by apt with the package;
  • a POSIX shell, used by the collectors and the chart scripts.

rsync and openssh-client are recommended, because they serve argus-fetch on the desk. They are not needed for the collection itself.

What is optional

Fail2Ban, CrowdSec and jq are optional. Without Fail2Ban, the SSH series is still collected. Without CrowdSec, its series is absent. A source that is not installed is reported as absent by argus-doctor.sh; that is normal.

What is not covered

The package and its documentation cover Debian and Ubuntu. Another distribution is not covered: the package is architecture-independent, but its dependencies, its paths and its cron file are the Debian ones.

The package installs scripts, a configuration file and a cron entry. It does not change the SSH configuration, the firewall or the Fail2Ban and CrowdSec settings of the server.

The repository’s install guide lists the files and the commands. The troubleshooting guide gives the checks to run when a source stays silent.
